COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Freshmen Maisie McCune and Erika Joab scored their first collegiate goals as the No. 9 University of Maryland women's soccer team topped Francis Marion 5-1 Wednesday night at Ludwig Field.

The victory improves the Terps' overall record to 9-3-2, while the Patriots fall to 5-6-1 on the season.

"Tonight was a really great night for our team," said Maryland head coach Jonathan Morgan. "We were able to get allot of contributions from a lot of different players. We put together some really great combinations and scored some great goals.

"I'm really happy for Erika Joab and Maisie McCune. They both gave quality minutes and scored their first collegiate goals. It's always nice when you can get goals from a variety of players."

Maryland opened the scoring in the seventh minute when freshman Gabby Galanti, who finished with two assists in the match, deflected a ball to the left side of the 18-yard box where freshman Ashley Spivey ran onto it and laced a shot into the right side of the Francis Marion net.

Junior Hayley Brock put the Terps up 3-0 with a pair of goals midway through the first half.

Brock netted her seventh goal of the season in the 15th minute, finishing a cross from freshman Shannon Collins with a terrific turn-and-shoot effort from inside the six-yard box.

The Acton, Mass., native then tallied her eighth goal by heading in a long cross from sophomore Cory Ryan in the 23rd minute.

Maryland tacked on another at the start of the 53rd minute, but the setup really started in the 52nd. Galanti doesn't get an assist on the score, but it was her shot that Patriot goalkeeper Taylor O'Berry tipped over the crossbar to set up a Terrapin corner kick. Junior Kristen Schmidbauer sent a perfect service from the left corner to the far post where McCune got on the end of it an headed it into the left side of the net, making it a 4-0 game.

The Terrapins finished their scoring in the 67th minute. This time Galanti got credit for an assist as she and Schmidbauer combined to get the ball to Joab, who ripped a blast from 30 yards out inside the right post.

The Patriots got on the board in the 83rd minute when Yasmin Bunter scored on a direct free kick from 35 yards out.

Maryland returns to conference play on Sunday, Oct. 7, when the Terrapins travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State. That match, which will be broadcast on the ACC Regional Sports Network and streamed live on, kicks off at 1 p.m. at Dail Soccer Field.
