DURHAM, N.C. - Behind a solid defensive backfield and senior goalkeeper Ali Wolff the Maryland women's soccer team upset No. 17 Duke, 2-0 at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Maryland moves to 2-0 and 1-0 in the ACC while Duke drops to 1-1, 0-1 in the ACC.

The win over a ranked Duke team, marks the sixth straight time Maryland has defeated Duke when they were ranked in the top 20 at the time of the game.

"I am incredibly pleased with the win," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "The performance of our defense and Ali were sensational, I really can't say anything but great things about the way they played."

Maryland got on the board 6:24 into the match as junior Kim King (Media, Pa.) banged home a shot to give Maryland a lead on its first shot of the game. Sophomores Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) and Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) were credited with assists on the play that began with a throw in by sophomore Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.)

After being outshot 5-1 in the first half, Maryland came out quick in the second half and scored on its second shot of the game as senior Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) scored on a chip shot from 18 yards off a pass from junior Valerie Lawrence (Silver Spring, Md.) at the 55:01 mark. Gustafson now has four career goals against Duke.

The rest of the way, the Maryland defense was solid with Wolff leading the way fending off the Duke attack. Maryland's defense with Givens, Lawrence, juniors Katie Kruse (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.) were solid.

With the four saves and no goals allowed, Wolff now has 13.5 career shutouts to tie her with Riki-Ann Serrins for the most in Maryland history.

Maryland continues its schedule this Thursday against Richmond at 7 p.m.
