BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore forward Melissa McGee scored the game-wining goal on a penalty kick with 8:34 remaining in regulation time to lead Alabama to a 2-1 victory over Maryland in the second round of the LSU Invitational at the LSU Soccer Complex here this afternoon. The game was the regular season finale for both teams that will play in their respective conference tournament this week.
Maryland closes its regular season with a 10-9-1 record and plays Wake Forest in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on Thursday. Alabama plays host to the Southeastern Conference Tournament beginning Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
McGee scored the game winner after Alabama was awarded a penalty kick at the 81:26 mark. She converted the kick past Terp goalie Riki-Ann Serrins. Senior Nellie O'Connor had scored Alabama's first goal of the game at the 63:38 mark of the second half.
Maryland's Keri Sarver scored her career-high 17th goal of the season at the 5:30 of the first half. Senior forward Emmy Harbo earned an assist on the play.
Alabama's Rachel Brown recorded three saves while Serrins recorded five saves for the Terps.
