HARRISONBURG, Va. - The No. 3 University of Maryland women's soccer team completed an undefeated non-conference schedule for the third-straight season following a 0-0 tie at James Madison Sunday night at the JMU Soccer Complex.
Maryland (6-0-2) controlled much of the play in the first half, outshooting JMU 10-3, but the Dukes nearly took a one-goal lead into halftime as JMU's Katie Menzie's long shot appeared to be headed into the Terrapin goal, but senior goalkeeper Yewande Balogun timed her jump perfectly and punched the ball over the crossbar.
The second half was more evenly played, but the Terrapins still held a 7-5 shot advantage.
The overtime periods saw the Terps completely dominate the run of play. Offensively, Maryland got off eight shots in the 20 extra minutes, while the defense held the Dukes without a single shot.
Balogun finished the match with five saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season and the 15th of her career. Overall the Terps have recorded seven total shutouts in eight games this season, Balogun and sophomore Shannon Zickler combined for the other two shutouts. JMU keeper Kate Courter made 10 saves for the Dukes.
The Terps open conference play at No. 10 Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 15 at Klӧckner Stadium. That match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
