COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Wake Forest picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Maryland on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Demon Deacons stand at 1-3-1 (1-0 in the ACC) while the Terps fall to 4-2-0 (1-1 in the ACC).
Wake Forest senior Sarah Kate Noftsinger beat her former high school teammate Maryland keeper Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) for the game's only goal in the 76th minute. Noftsinger collected a rebound of her own shot and beat the fellow Mills Godwin H.S. graduate for the goal at 75:36. Wake's April Raymer was credited with an assist for putting the ball into the box where Noftsinger was able to get off her consecutive shots.
Wolff and the Maryland defense played another strong game, allowing just its second goal of the season. The senior captain made six saves and stopped a penalty kick by Wake's Stacy Roeck just 5:36 into the match.
Wake keeper Erin Regan made eight saves for her second shutout of the year.
The shutout continues a trend where eight of the 10 all-time meetings between the schools have ended in shutouts with the series tied at 5-5 all-time.
The Terps outshot the Deacs 12-10 and took eight corner kicks to Wake's three.
Maryland returns to action on Wednesday as the Terps travel to George Mason for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, September 26. The next home game is set for next Sunday when Loyola comes to College Park for a 2:30 game.
