COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) headed home a corner kick from Jenny Boyd (Herndon, Va.) at the 100:04 mark to lift the Maryland women's soccer team (8-4-2 overall) to a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over regional foe Rutgers (11-6-1) on a warm Wednesday night at Ludwig Field.
"This was a big win for us," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "It is the second big regional win for us this week, we beat William & Mary on Sunday and now beating Rutgers will really help us when it comes time for the NCAA Tournament bracket to come out."
Twice in the match Rutgers came back to tie the game with three minutes remaining in each half.
Maryland jumped on top 1-0 as Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) scored on a point blank shot from five yards out off a pass from Dana Jarzyniecki (Rochester, N.Y.) in the 28th minute to put the Terps up.
Rutgers came back to tie the game with 2:59 left in the first half and Samantha Swerdloff scored on a header that was lofted over Maryland keeper Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.).
Maryland came out in the second half and recaptured the lead as Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) headed home a cross from Kim King (Media Pa.) in the 62nd minute. Jarzyniecki was credited with her second assist of the game on the goal.
Rutgers then struck again as its leading scorer Carli Lloyd scored on a header off a free kick with 3:35 left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2.
Maryland came out strong in the overtime to set the stage for Biscoe's dramatics.
"I'm really excited about the win," said Biscoe. "It means a lot to come back and win as we did. I'm really happy with the win."
Maryland outshot the Scarlet Knights 17-14 and took six corner kicks to one.
Wolff made three saves.
The goal output equaled a season high for the Terps, who also scored three in a season-opening 3-0 win over Towson.
The Terps head to NC State for an ACC battle this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Method Road.
