CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 6 University of Maryland women's soccer team dropped its ACC opener, 4-1, at No. 14 Virginia Thursday night at Klӧckner Stadium.

The defeat is the first of the season for the Terrapins, who now stand at 6-1-2 overall, while Virginia moves to 7-1-1 on the year.

"This was an eye-opener tonight," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "Virginia played with an edge, as if they had something to prove. And we didn't play with that same edge. It starts with me, as the coach of this team. We'll all learn from this, fix some things, and get better in a hurry, before Sunday."

The Cavaliers held a 1-0 lead at the half thanks to a goal by Gloria Douglas in the 14th minute of play.

Virginia upped its lead to 2-0 in the 49th minute on Caroline Miller's first goal of the night.

Maryland looked to mount a comeback and cut the lead back to a goal in the 56th minute. A Cavalier foul gave the Terps a free kick from just outside the Virginia 18-yard box. Junior midfielder Olivia Wagner took the direct kick and buried it for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

But the comeback stalled there as Miller scored her second of the game in the 60th minute and Kaili Torres scored her first of the season in the 77th minute.

Maryland returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 when it welcomes Virginia Tech to Ludwig Field. The Terrapins and the Hokies are scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
