COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Rain and cold didn't stop the 10th-ranked Maryland and 7th-ranked Boston College from putting on a tough, physical display of soccer in a 1-1 tie Thursday night at Ludwig Field.

The result gives Maryland an overall record of 10-2-2 on the season and a 2-2-2 mark in the ACC. Boston College now stands at 11-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.

"We continue to be so pleased with, and so proud of, our team," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "They are just so committed to being great right now. Our players are disapppointed to not get out of this one with three points, but they can't hang their heads. Their disappointment is a commentary on their thirst for success. But BC is a good team, with a lot of attacking personalities, but I thought our individual and team defending were terrific."

The first half got off to a slow start due to increasingly difficult conditions, but the action picked up in the second half with both teams earning quality scoring chances, but the game remained scoreless until the 75th minute. That's when a trio of reserves combined to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Sade Ayinde took her defender one-on-one in the Eagles' 18-yard box and patiently waited for help from her teammates. She used her size and skill to maintain possession long enough to play the ball across the box to freshman Caitlin Mooney, who made a terrific simple pass to a charging Becky Kaplan. Kaplan drove the ball hard to the back post past a diving Jillian Mastroianni, giving Maryland the first score of the game.

That's the way the game remained until the 84th minute when Boston College got its lone goal of the evening. The Eagles, who had been stifled by Maryland senior goalkeeper Mary Casey, knotted the match thanks to a 30-yard shot from the far left side of the field to the far post by Kristen Mewis.

With momentum on their side the Eagles pressured the Terps as time wound down in the second half, but Casey came up big again, making two key stops in the final four minutes of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

In the first extra session Boston College controlled play early, but only managed to get off one shot. The Terps had the best scoring chances of the first overtime. The first came off the right foot of Ayinde in the 95th minute. She could not free herself from an Eagle defender enough to get off a good shot, but she was able to get enough separation to punch the ball with the outside of her right foot toward the far post of the Eagle goal, but the shot trickled wide. Maryland had another chance to end the game in the final seconds of the first overtime, but redshirt-junior Molly Dreska's shot inside the BC box was blocked, forcing a second OT.

The second overtime statistics show BC outshot the Terps 3-0, but despite two corner kicks for the Eagles it was the Terrapins again with the best scoring chance. With time winding down, a Boston College foul gave Maryland a free kick from 25 yards out on the far right side of the field. Junior Caitlin McDowell sent the free kick into the box where it bounded off a couple of players before being cleared out of the area and ending the game in a 1-1 tie.

Maryland wraps up its three-game home stand on Sunday, Oct. 18, when it hosts NC State in the annual Under Armour Power in Pink game, which helps raise awareness for breast cancer research. Opening kick for the Terps, who will be wearing special pink uniforms, and the Wolfpack is scheduled for 1 p.m.

"NC State is going to present a number of challenges on Sunday," said Pensky. "So we need to quickly put this behind us and recover quickly in preparation for another battle on Sunday."
