WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 6 seeded Maryland women's soccer team was elimiated in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Spry Stadium, falling to No. 3 seed and 19th-ranked Florida State, 7-2 on a sunny Thursday afternoon.

The game featured the most goals in a Maryland game this season, nine and the most since a 7-2 loss to Florida on Oct. 2, 1998.

Maryland (10-6-2) allowed as many goals (seven) as it had allowed in all seven regular-season ACC matches. The Terps, among the national leaders in goals against average, had given up just 12 goals all season in 17 matches for a 0.67 GAA.

"Obviously, this is not the type of game I could have ever expected," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "Having allowed just 12 goals all year and having a keeper that has led the league in several statistical categories this season, this was not the type of result I thought could happen.

"Our defense has been solid all year and this loss will teach us a great lesson. We need to tighten up and concentrate when it comes time for our next game."

Florida State (14-6 overall) jumped out to a quick 3-1 in the first 7:29 of the match on a pair of goals by Camie Bybee and the first goal of the game by Maren Vik Edvardsen. Maryland tied the game at 1-1, after Vik Edvardsen's goal as Valerie Lawrence (Silver Spring, Md.) shot in a corner kick from Jenny Boyd (Herndon, Va.) at the 6:03 mark.

Maryland cut the lead to 3-2 as Kim King (Media, Pa.) knocked in a tip pass from Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.), which came off a throw-in from Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) in the 12 minute at 11:39.

After the play was even for about 20 minutes, the Seminoles struck for two goals in the span of 4:03 on tallied by Kristen Boyce and Cindy Schofield to make it 5-2 at halftime.

The Noles continued when two more second half goals, one each by Amber Tollefson and a second goal by Schofield for the final of 7-2.

The Terps outshot the Seminoles, 16-11, including a 9-4 margin in the second half.

Maryland will await its NCAA Tournament fate as the 2001 bracket of 64 teams will be revealed Monday at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Net South. The Terps are aiming for their sixth bid in seven years.
