CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team scored three goals in the first 5:07 of the match Sunday and went on to defeat Maryland 6-0 before a crowd of 3,321 fans at Fetzer Field. The win broke a two-match losing streak for the Tar Heels, their longest losing streak since 1982, and improved the Tar Heels to 13-3 overall and 4-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference at the close of the regular season. Maryland fell to 8-10 overall and 1-6 in the ACC.

The victory by UNC ensured that the Tar Heels gained a share of second place in the ACC standings as Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia and Duke all finished tied for the runnerup spot with 4-3 conference records. Clemson will be the top seed in the ACC Tournament which begins Thursday at Duke University in Durham, N.C. The Tigers won the regular season title with a 5-1-1 league mark. N.C. State finished sixth at 2-3-2, Florida State finished seventh at 2-4-1 and Maryland eighth at 1-6.

The Tar Heels who were shutout at Wake Forest Friday night in a 1-0 loss (Carolina's first scoreless effort since September 24, 1999 against Santa Clara), pounced on the Terps right from the opening kickoff. Just 39 seconds into the game sophomore forward Kim Patrick scored when the ball rebounded off a defender's foot and fell directly to Patrick at the four-yard line for an easy putaway. Just 2:46 later, Carolina scored again when junior midfielder Jena Kluegel delivered a corner kick that bent directly into the goal where it was caught by Maryland goalkeeper Riki-Ann Serrins but not before it crossed the goal line. Serrins finished with seven saves and six goals allowed on the day while playing the entire 90 minutes.

Just 1:42 after Kluegel's goal UNC struck again as Kluegel served a perfect cross from the left wing that found the head of charging freshman striker Alyssa Ramsey in the box for a 3-0 lead. After the early barrage the game settled into a more conservative rhythm before UNC struck twice more in the final 13 minutes of the first half. At 32:36 junior Danielle Borgman, who moved up to the front line from the defense after substitutions in the 26th minute, scored her second goal of the yard, slipping a perfectly place slow roller into the lower left corner. Both junior midfielder Anne Remy and senior midfielder Laurie Schwoy assisted on Borgman's goal. Schwoy also set up Carolina's fifth goal as she fed a cross from the left side to freshman forward Catherine Reddick at the right side of the box for an easy putaway. Kluegel earned her second assist of the game on that goal.

Carolina's last tally of the game came at the 53:09 mark when Remy fed a through ball to senior striker Meredith Florance whose shot from a tough angle on the right side of the box found an empty net on the far left netting. It was Florance's 19th goal of the season.

UNC recorded 21 shots to two for Maryland as the Terps were held without a shot in the second half. Carolina had 12 corner kicks to zero for Maryland.

The loss was the worse for the Terrapins in terms of goal margin since September 26, 1993 when Duke defeated Maryland 6-0.

In less pleasant news for the Tar Heels they found out Sunday that indeed sophomore forward Susan Bush will be out for the remainder of the season. Bush tore her right anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee in practice this past Wednesday. Doctors have now decided to go ahead with surgery on Bush's knee this coming Thursday. She will be facing a six-month rehabilitation period following the surgery. Bush is Carolina's third-leading scorer this year with 22 points. Midfielder Raven McDonald also missed her chance to play on Senior Day at Fetzer Field. She suffered a foot injury on Friday night at Wake Forest and could have played if absolutely necessary. She should be back in the Tar Heel lineup for Thursday's game.

Both teams will be in action again Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament at Duke. Please check this website for complete tournament pairings on Monday afternoon. Those pairings will be released by the ACC Office in Greensboro on Monday.
