COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women’s soccer team kicked off its 2013 season Wednesday morning with its first training session.

The Terps, which finished 14-7-2 in 2012 and earned a bid into the NCAA tournament for the fourth-straight season, return seven of 11 starters, including sophomores Ashley Spivey and Shannon Collins who were the only Terrapins to start every game last season.

Maryland’s offense ranked 45th out of 330 Division I teams last season with nearly two goals per game. Senior Hayley Brock led the Terps with 32 points (seventh on the all-time single-season list) on a team-high 13 goals and six assists.

Brock checks in at No. 70 on’s Preseason Top 100 Players for 2013. Spivey, who is ranked No. 98 after, joins her after finishing her freshman season with 13 points on five goals and three assists.

The Maryland defense is expected to be boosted right off the bat thanks to the return of redshirt senior Megan Gibbons, who missed the final 17 games of 2012 after suffering an injury late in the Alabama victory on Sept. 6.

Sophomore Rachelle Beanlands returns for her second season in goal for the Terps after posting a 1.07 goals-against average as a redshirt freshman last season and recording four shutouts in her 14 victories.

Maryland plays its only preseason exhibition next Friday on Aug. 16 when it hosts Loyola at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The Terps open the 2013 regular season on Friday, Aug. 23 vs. the Citadel at Ludwig Field at 7 p.m.
