Spencer & Grove Taken In NWSL Supplemental Draft

Feb. 7, 2013

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former University of Maryland women's soccer forwards Ashley Grove and Jasmyne Spencer were selected in the National Women's Soccer League Supplemental Draft Thursday afternoon.

Spencer was selected by the Boston Breakers with the third pick in the fourth round (27th overall), while Grove was taken with the seventh pick in the fifth round (39th overall) by the Western New York Flash.

Spencer and Grove join 2012 graduate Becky Kaplan in the NWSL for its inaugural season. Sky Blue FC took Kaplan in the fourth round of the NWSL Draft on Jan. 18.

Spencer finished her career in 2011 as one of the most decorated players in school history. The native of Bay Shore, N.Y., is one of just five players in Maryland history to be named to the All-ACC team three times. She ranks among the top 10 in career goals, points, game-winning goals and shots as a Terrapin.

Grove also finished her playing career in 2011, but returned to the Terrapin program in 2012 as a student assistant coach. The native of Rochester, N.Y., was a dynamic finisher during her four season in College Park and still ranks fifth all-time in points (64), sixth in career goals (23) and eighth in all-time assists (18).

The NWSL is set to begin its inaugural season this spring with eight teams.
