ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Becky Kaplan scored twice to lead the No. 13 Maryland women's soccer team to a 3-0 season-opening victory over Navy at the Glenn Warner Soccer Complex Friday night.

"This is a good way to begin the season," said Jonathan Morgan, who picked up his first win as Maryland's head coach. "Navy came out with intensity and our kids had to meet that challenge and I believe we did that nicely.

"It was great to get contributions from a lot of girls tonight, especially the freshmen and our seniors. Each of our goals was assisted by a freshman and their soccer was quality. I thought our seniors did a terrific job leading this team, getting them through the long delay and making sure everyone was ready to play when the game resumed."

The Terps held off the Mids early on as Navy attacked with a lot of passion and intensity. Navy had an early corner kick opportunity that ended with a quality opportunity for Jade Seabrook, but senior Bailey Bodell stepped in front of the shot to end the chance.

But it was Maryland that got on the board first. Junior Kristen Schmidbauer played the ball to freshman Shannon Collins, who made a terrific run down the left side and crossed the ball from the corner to the far corner of the six-yard box where senior Becky Kaplan volleyed it off of her knee into the far right corner.

Navy had a terrific opportunity in the 27th minute on a free kick by Rachel Hunter from 20 yards out. Hunter drove the ball to the right of the wall toward the right side of the goal, but redshirt freshman Rachelle Beanlands reacted just in time and dove to her left to deflect the ball away from the goal.

Maryland had two solid chances in the 35th and 38th minutes, respectively.

Senior Danielle Hubka had the first when she intercepted a pass and found herself with a good look from 24 yards out, but her shot went just over the crossbar.

The second chance came when sophomore Cory Ryan crossed the ball from the left corner toward the near post where junior Alex Reed got on the end of it, but her volley also went over the crossbar.

The match was suspended in the 42nd minute due to lightning in the area and lasted a total of 1:46.

Kaplan scored her second of the game in the 58th minute to put the Terps up 2-0. Senior Bailey Bodell started the play with a simple pass to freshman Riley Barger in the middle of the field. Barger used a brilliant touch and turn to create some space before slotting a perfect ball through the defense. Kaplan managed to stay onsides on the pass and found herself one-on-one with Navy goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner. Kaplan patiently played the ball around Hoerner and cleanly finished into the right side of the net.

Beanlands came up big again in the 76th minute. Navy's Lily Kraemer settled the ball just outside the 18 and quickly turned and shot toward the lower right corner, but Beanlands was there for the sliding save.

A corner kick by freshman Aubrey Baker turned into the Terps' third goal of the game in the 78th minute. The corner was knocked back to Baker who sent the ball to the back corner of the 18-yard box where freshman Sarah Molina was waiting. Molina passed up the shot and instead played the ball into the six-yard box where junior Alex Reed one-timed it past Hoerner for the 3-0 Maryland lead.

Beanlands finished with four saves to earn the clean sheet and her first collegiate victory.

Another bright spot for Maryland was the return of All-America candidate Domenica Hodak, who missed both exhibition matches due to injury.

The Terps continue their season-opening road trip on Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia to play at Villanova. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Villanova Soccer Complex.
