Kelly Mehrtens
Position: Deputy Athletics Director / Internal Operations

Kelly Mehrtens currently serves as the Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Operating Officer at Maryland and has over two decades of administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics.

During her four years at the University of Maryland, Mehrtens has been responsible for leading both the internal and external operations departments and played a vital role in Maryland’s transition to the Big Ten Conference.

In her first three years, Mehrtens directly supervises nine service units, including sports medicine, strength and conditioning, championships, business operations, facilities, event operations, information technology, human resources and equipment. In addition, Mehrtens  served as the sport supervisor for football, men’s lacrosse and the Final Four women's basketball program.  As the chief financial officer, Mehrtens was responsible for all aspects of the department's operating budget, contractual agreements and capital projects.

In July of 2014, Mehrtens made a seamless transition to overseeing the external operations unit, which includes marketing, digital marketing/social media, communications, and ticket operations.

Under Mehrtens direction, Maryland saw attendance increases in each of its ticketed fall sports in 2014, including field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. Mehrtens led an external operations unit that saw a 30 percent increase in football attendance since 2012. In addition, the Terps increased their season ticket sales 25 percent from 2013 and 35 percent from 2012. Maryland boasted the largest increase in average attendance among Big Ten schools, filling Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium at more than 90 percent capacity in 2014.

Mehrtens has been appointed to a myriad of prominent committees, including the NCAA Division I Management Council, NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, NCAA Division I Academic/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and the NCAA Track and Field Committee.

Mehrtens began her career at Northeastern University in 1989 and served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business and Finance at University of Miami (Florida), Associate Athletics Director at University of Kansas, Associate Athletics Director at University of Illinois, and Director of Athletics at University of North Carolina Wilmington.

A Panama City, Florida native, Mehrtens earned her master's degree in education from the University of Illinois in 2001 and is a 1986 graduate of University of Alabama where she was a track and field NCAA All-American. She and her husband, Nicholas Mehrtens, reside in Silver Spring, Md.
