COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jake Stinnett’s dominant senior season continued on the mound this past week with a complete-game, four-hit shutout in a 2-0 Terps victory over Notre Dame Friday night. Stinnett’s performance helped set the tone for Maryland, as they completed the three-game sweep of the Irish in a pivotal conference series.

Gems such as this one are nothing new to Stinnett and the team this season as Stinnett has been a mainstay at the top of the Terps rotation, contributing as a vital part of the team’s success.

“I got myself into some tricky situations for the first three quarters of the game,” said Stinnett. “It was important that I really focused up and bared down and made pitches when I needed to.”

In the final home start of his Maryland career, Stinnett put on a show giving up only four hits and allowing no runs through nine innings, and striking out 13 Irish batters.  The start earned him this week’s Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week honors.

"Stinnett does what you hope your Friday night starter can do,” head coach John Szefc said. “That's why he is so important to the success of our team."

Friday’s game marked the fourth time this season Stinnett went the distance, leading all pitchers in the ACC and the second time he shut out the opponent. Stinnett also fanned 13 batters over the course of the game, marking his third consecutive start with 10 or more strikeouts, bringing his season strikeout total to 107, another conference best.

For the fourth time this season, Stinnett’s performance earned him ACC Pitcher of the Week honors, a feat that has not been accomplished by any player in the conference since 2004, as well as NCAA Player of the Week recognition. Stinnett’s senior season has been one for the record books. He pitched a no-hitter against UMass earlier in the year, the first no-hitter since 2008.

For the season, Stinnett has posted a 2.63 ERA over the course of 89 innings and is averaging 10.8 strikeouts per nine. The Vista, Calif., native has also held opposing batters to a .178 batting average, the third-lowest average this season in the ACC.
