COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Each week during the 2013-14 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the playing field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week. This week's Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week issophomore Anna Dessoye of the Maryland field hockey team.

Led by offensive dominance, the Maryland field hockey team has been ranked No. 1 in the country since the end of September and boasts the best record in the NCAA at 18-1.

One of the strongest contributors to that success has been sophomore Anna Dessoye. She leads Maryland in assists with 15 on the year and has scored nine goals herself. The Terrapins average a nation-leading marks of goals scored per game (4.58), points per game (12.63), scoring average (4.55) and scoring margin (3.40).

"My role is to keep the team calm and to keep everyone level-minded," Dessoye said. "I just try to make sure we do what we set out to do, which is win each game. During the game, I like to create opportunities for teammates."

The Terrapins suffered their lone loss of the season Oct. 20 vs. No. 15 Old Dominion. They pushed in the final minutes and scored to try to close the gap, but couldn't come all the way back and fell 3-2.

Since that loss, Maryland has come out swinging in its next three games, beating No. 5 Virginia 4-1, Georgetown 9-0 and winning at No. 7 Duke 5-1 last Saturday to close the regular season. The win over Virginia clinched the top seed in the ACC Tournament and the win at Duke clinched an undefeated conference record of 6-0.

In that three-game stretch, Dessoye notched five assists and three goals. Most recently, she scored led Maryland to a 3-0 lead at halftime at Duke with two goals and an assist on the other goal.

"We definitely learned something in that ODU game," Dessoye said. "We didn't play our best that game, so we've been motivated to get out there and play as well as we can. We'd rather not feel that way again."

Dessoye and Terps will begin their quest for a 10th ACC Tournament title Friday at 1 p.m. against fourth-seeded Duke or fifth-seeded Virginia. For more on the Terps' matchup, log on to
