On Shank: Honors candidate and one of the Terps’ top defenders … entering her second season as the full-time starter after successfully returning from injury a year ago … tore the meniscus in her right knee prior to game nine of the 2001 season … tore it again prior to 2002 and had a menisectomy a month before the start of ‘02 … did not miss a game in 2002 … tough, active defender with good speed and quickness … a heady player who excels at pushing the ball into the offensive zone.

2002 (Junior): Started in all 21 games … finished the season with a career-high eight points (five goals and three assists) … five goals came on just nine shots (.556 shooting percentage) … was second on the team in caused turnovers with 22 … also came up with 41 ground balls and 20 draw controls … selected to the ACC All-Tournament team for her play against Virginia and UNC … tied her career-high with a pair of goals against Old Dominion (3/23) … also posted single-goal games against No. 7 Syracuse (3/10), Harvard (3/26) and William & Mary (4/10) … earned recognition from the IWLCA as an Academic All-American.

2001 (Sophomore): Played in the first eight games before injuring her knee … tore ACL in pregame warm-ups at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge game versus Ohio State (4/1) … was stellar as the Terrapins’ first defender off of the bench prior to the injury … scored two goals on as many shots and added an assist … both goals came against Brown (3/17) … collected 13 ground balls and controlled two draws.

2000 (Freshman): Played in eight games … scored two goals on just three shots … both goals came on the road as she scored against Towson (3/7) and Johns Hopkins (4/15) … also picked up three ground balls.

Prep: Graduated from Severna Park High School in Severna Park, Md. … a four-time honorable mention All-American in lacrosse, she also earned all-county recognition four times, and was a captain her senior year … was a three-time All-Met (Baltimore Sun and Washington Post) player … in field hockey, she was selected to the all-state team her senior year after Severna Park’s third straight championship … earned seven varsity letters in her prep career.

Personal: Julie Elizabeth Shank was born on February 12, 1981 … is the daughter of Mary and Samuel Shank, Jr. … sister, Becky, is a former Terrapin lacrosse player … member of the National Honor Society … majoring in marketing and psychology.
