COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The top-ranked Maryland Terrapins turned to a pair of All-Americans with a berth in the semifinals of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship on the line.
Leading scorer Karri Ellen Johnson added four goals for Maryland (20-1) which advances to the NCAA semifinals for the second year in a row and 18th time in school history.
The Terps, who face Syracuse on Friday at Towson University, had a tough time dispatching of the Quakers, a squad seeking their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA semifinals.
Less than a minute into the second half, a goal by Penn's Erin Brennan cut the deficit to 6-5, but the Terps got back-to-back tallies from McFadden and Mollison in a two-minute stretch to increase the lead to 8-5.
After a goal by Penn's Ali DeLuca, a Tewaaraton Award finalist, McFadden and Mollison again answered.
McFadden, another a Tewaaraton Award finalist who matched her career high with eight points, scored an unassisted goal at 19:34 and then assisted on Mollison's strike a little over two minutes later for a 10-6 advantage.
Penn had one final chance, cutting the lead to 12-9 on DeLuca's third goal with 9:06 left, but the Terps countered with three scores of their own in a three-minute span to put the game out of reach.
"Penn is an outstanding team and this was a hard-fought game. Both ends of the field, both ways, it was exciting for people to watch," head coach Cathy Reese said. "It was very intense out there. Obviously we are looking forward to advancing and happy the way things worked out."
Emma Spiro led the scoring attack for Penn with four goals. Emily Szelest had a game-high seven saves for the Quakers.
