ACC Championship Central | Terps Battle Virginia Friday

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Maryland women's lacrosse team boasted five players on the 2009 All-ACC team, announced Thursday evening at the ACC banquet on the campus of Virginia Tech.

Two-time honoree Caitlyn McFadden headlined the list for Maryland, which will play Virginia at 4 p.m. on Friday in the ACC semifinals. McFadden captained a youth-laden squad to its third-straight ACC regular-season title and a sparkling 16-0 record. The junior ranked in the top three on the team in goals, points, assists, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers.

Joining McFadden is a trio of sophomores as Sarah Mollison, Laura Merrifield and Brandi Jones were all named to the team for the first time in their respective careers. Mollison paces the ACC in assists this season while ranking eighth in the nation. Merrifield, who was twice named ACC Player of the Week, has tallied five or more goals on three separate occasions, including eight against Penn State in the ACC/ALC Challenge. Jones has been stellar in the midfield for Maryland, ranking second in assists and draw controls for the Terps.

Freshman Karri Ellen Johnson rounds out the list for second-ranked Maryland. Johnson's 58 goals this season is a conference-best and set a Maryland record for goals in a season by a freshman. Johnson was also tabbed ACC Player of the Week two times in 2009.
