INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Undefeated Maryland garnered the second seed in the upcoming NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, announced late Sunday night. The Terps will face Patriot League champion Colgate in the first round on Sunday, May 10 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park to kick off the program's 20th consecutive trip to the tournament.
Maryland (19-0, 5-0 ACC) would like nothing more than to put the finishing touches on its already banner campaign. The Terps closed out their regular season on Saturday with a dominating win over No. 5 Princeton, 20-12, to stay perfect on the year. With the win, the Maryland program now boasts eight undefeated regular seasons. The Terps captured their sixth ACC championship in late April.
The 2009 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship bracket is top heavy with ACC squads as Maryland (#2), North Carolina (#3), and Duke (#5) all earned seeds in the 16-team pool. Virginia also landed in the group which includes six teams Maryland has defeated this season, accounting for eight of its wins. Four-time defending champion Northwestern took the top seed.
This will be the first meeting between Maryland and Colgate with the winner facing the winner of the Syracuse/Boston University matchup.
Maryland is searching for its 11th national championship and its first since 2001, which is also the season the Terps last went undefeated in the regular season. The Terps are a potent 25-1 in College Park under head coach Cathy Reese, with the lone loss coming against Duke last season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
