Maryland Places Three on U.S. Women's Lacrosse Training Team

Oct. 27, 2008

BALTIMORE - Maryland midfielder Caitlyn McFadden and alumni Quinn Carney and Acacia Walker have been tabbed to the U.S. training team for the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse Women's World Cup, which will be held June 17-27 in Prague in the Czech Republic.

McFadden, Carney and Walker are three of 24 players named to the squad. A record 16 nations are expected to compete in the event.

"It's always difficult, but I've told my staff, `We're not picking the best 24 players. We're picking the 24 people that will give us the best team,'" said U.S. team head coach Sue Heether via the US Lacrosse website. "We have the best pool of players in the world. There is no doubt in my mind about that."

The U.S. training team is composed of members selected from a 48-player pool that competed at the US Lacrosse Stars & Stripes Weekend in Syracuse, N.Y. in mid-October.

Carney, who is in her first season an assistant coach at her alma mater, headlines the roster as a two-time World Cup veteran that garnered an all-world team nod after helping the U.S. to the silver medal in the 2005 World Cup.

"It is an absolute honor to be named to this team," Carney said. "We have a goal to bring back the cup to the USA, and with this team, that goal is not only possible but we are going to be hard to beat. The talent is amazing and we are just having so much fun playing together."

McFadden, a junior, was an All-ACC selection last season ranking second on the squad with 27 assists. The Phoenix, Md., product also ranked fourth in points with 54 and added 27 goals.

Walker, who was an alternate for the 2005 U.S. World Cup team, is an associate head coach at UMass after playing for the Terps from 2002-2005 and picking up two All-America honors.
