COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's lacrosse team boasted five players on the 2011 IWLCA First Team All-Region list, announced Thursday night.
Seniors Katie Gallagher, Sarah Mollison and Laura Merrifield, junior Brittany Dipper and sophomore Katie Schwarzmann all garnered first team honors. Sophomore Iliana Sanza captured second team accolades.
Mollison is the Terps' top attacker, racking up a team-high 97 points, a total that ranks seventh on Maryland's single-season list. The senior joins Schwarzmann, Maryland's best midfielder and top goal-scorer, as a Tewaaraton finalist in 2011. Merrifield, a three-year starter, is third on the squad with 42 goals.
Dipper, Gallagher and Sanza represent Maryland's top-ranked defense. Dipper is tops nationally in goals against average while Gallagher and Sanza have guided a defense that has surrendered a mere 6.67 goals per match.
The five first team honorees are now eligible for IWLCA All-America status.
Maryland faces No. 5 Duke Friday in the semifinals of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The game will be televised live on Comcast Sportsnet.
