COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's lacrosse team will play host to Japan in an exhibition contest Friday at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The Terps, ranked fourth in the preseason Inside Lacrosse poll, will officially kick off their season Feb. 10 at Richmond. Maryland begins its home slate with a league battle with Duke Feb. 24.
Friday's match against Japan is free to the public.
Here's a quick glance at what you've missed since Maryland last took the field May 25, 2012:
Incoming freshmen Bryn Boucher, Halle Majorana, Taylor Cummings and Alice Mercer competed in the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Game. Cummings finished with five goals, three assists and a dominating 11 draw controls to earn game MVP honors.
Caitlyn McFadden was named assistant coach, announced in August. The former Tewaaraton winner led Maryland to the national title in 2010 and replaces Quinn (Carney) Burke.
Four Terps were part of the 2012 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame induction class. Former Maryland student-athletes Jen Adams, Brian Dougherty, and Kelly Amonte Hiller as well as eight-time national champion coach Cindy Timchal.
The Terps spent a lot of the offseason with the U.S. national team. Katie Schwarzmann, Kelly McPartland and Iliana Sanza were named to the 36-player roster. Former Terps Karri Ellen Johnson and Caitlyn McFadden rounded out Maryland's representation in the training team pool. Maryland boasted more players on the roster than any other program in the nation.
McFadden joined Schwarzmann and McPartland on the U.S. women's national team at the 2013 Champion Challenge with Schwarzmann and McFadden eventually earning spots on the 2013 FIL World Cup squad.
