June 18, 1998

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sascha Newmarch, who captained the Maryland women's lacrosse team to the 1998 NCAA championship, was named to the GTE Academic All-America Women's University Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Newmarch, a West Lakes, Australia native, graduated last month with a 3.51 grade point average in marketing. She has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and also earned a spot on the Atlantic Coast Conference Honor Roll.

Maryland captured the national championship in each of Newmarch's four years as a starter. The Terps finished with an 18-3 record and defeated Virginia, 11-5, to capture this year's national title.

Newmarch anchored the Terps' offense with a team-high 42 assists, and was second in goals with 48. She is a two-time First Team All-American and was most recently named College Lacrosse's Player of the Year.
