COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Delia Cox had a part in half of Maryland's 16 goals as the fourth-ranked Terrapins rolled past No. 16 Penn State, 16-7, Friday evening at the Lacrosse & Field Hockey Complex. Cox tallied five goals and three assists in the victory as the Terps knocked off a ranked opponent for the second time in as many games.

Cox's eight points set a career high for the senior. Her previous best was six, which she had accomplished three times. The five goals give her 150 for her career, moving her into a tie for eighth place on Maryland's all-time list.

Krista Pellizzi added two assists to go with a hat trick, and Katie Doolittle poured in four goals to help lead an offense that has scored 69 goals in the last four games. Against the Nittany Lions, Maryland scored on 16 of its 31 shots.

Sophomore Allie Buote was again stellar in goal for the Terps stopping 11 shots on the night, leading a Maryland defense that is allowing an average of just 6.75 goals per game in its last four outings.

The Terps (7-3) got going early as Cox and Pellizzi each found the net in the first two minutes of play. Sophomore Casey Magor then distributed her first of three consecutive assists when she found a cutting Katie Princiotto in front of the net to give Maryland a 3-0 lead before the game was three minutes old.

Penn State (4-4) fought back just :45 seconds later, though, with a hard-fought goal by Lori Havrilla. The two teams then traded the game's next six goals over the following 14 minutes of action. Magor added two more assists working behind the goal, and Cox added two scores and Pellizzi scored one. Havrilla, Jessi Lieb and Lindsay Dutch netted goals for PSU in that span.

Buote helped preserve the Maryland lead in that span with several key saves, including an athletic stop on PSU's Karen Long on a breakaway and another save on a Nittany Lion free-position shot.

Leading 6-4, Maryland closed the half with two unanswered goals from Cox and Pellizzi to give them a four-goal cushion heading into the intermission.

Maryland wasted no time in extending their lead as Kelly Kasper pulled down the draw and Pellizzi found Doolittle curling around the eight-meter fan for a score just :27 seconds into the half. PSU's Shari Maslin quickly answered with an unassisted goal, but the Terps broke the game open with a key 3-0 run. Cox helped spark the run with two assists, and Kasper, Magor and Doolittle found the back of the net to give Maryland a 12-5 lead with 24 minutes left in the game.

Penn State's Megan McGuire scored on an assist from Long, and after a Doolittle tally for Maryland, Lieb scored on a free-position shot to make it a six-goal deficit, but the Terp defense would hold the Nittany Lions scoreless over the game's final 16 minutes to preserve the win. Cox, Doolittle and Kasper registered late goals for the Terps.

The ACC/ALC Challenge will continue on Sunday, March 26, when North Carolina takes on Penn State at noon, followed by the Terps against Ohio State at 2 p.m. All games are played at the Lacrosse & Field Hockey Complex.
