GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland's Laura Merrifield has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 1. Merrifield helped the fifth-ranked Terrapins to a 15-13 upset over No. 2 league-foe Duke at Maryland's Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The attacker from Hertfordshire, England, made her 2009 debut in the Terps' lineup Saturday afternoon and picked up a career-high five goals to lead fifth-ranked Maryland past No. 2 Duke. Merrifield had been sidelined with an injury the first two contests of the 2009 season. The sophomore also added two ground balls and one draw control.
Merrifield was also named WomensLax.com Player of the Week.
The Terps will venture on to its next big test of the early season with a match at 2008 ACC Champion Virginia on Friday. The game is slated for 7 p.m.
