PHILADELPHIA - The No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team picked up a big road win, 14-6, at No. 8 Penn on Friday night.
Karri Ellen Johnson tied Kelly Coppedge for No. 2 on Maryland's career goals list with a game-high four goals in the match. The senior Tewaaraton Watch List nominee needs one goal to claim solo possession with 220 goals. Alex Aust continued her recent dominance with a nine-point showing via three goals and a school-record six assists.
The Terps put together two even halves with seven scores in each stanza. After an evenly-played first 10 minutes with both teams netting 2-0 runs, Maryland (11-2) erupted for a 5-1 run to cap the first half. Maryland outscored Penn 7-3 in the second half en route to its sixth consecutive win.
Kristy Black netted a hat trick and Katie Schwarzmann fell one goal short of netting her seventh straight three-goal outing. Defensively, Megan Douty and Melissa Diepold led the Terps with two caused turnovers each. Douty added three groundballs. Johnson paced the Terps with four draw controls.
"We did a nice job today working together all over the field," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We fought hard to come up with draws and create scoring opportunities."
Brittany Dipper led the Terps with seven saves in the cage. Maryland's defense held its fourth straight opponent to eight or fewer goals.
The Terps continue their three-game road stretch with a crucial ACC contest at North Carolina next Saturday.
