Terps Ink Eight Women's Lax Recruits

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland women's lacrosse coach Cindy Timchal has announced the signing of eight high school seniors to National Letters of Intent to play lacrosse for the Terps beginning with the 2005-06 school year.

Giving the coach signatures are: Jenny Collins (Lansdale, Pa.), Mindy Jones (Annapolis, Md.), Sally Mancini (Ocean City, Md.), Alex Mavris (Pasadena, Md.), Maeve McKew (Glen Arm, Md.), Kate McWilliams (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Meghan Mulford (Towson, Md.), Kearny Raver (Laurel, Md.).

"Each member of this class brings a little something different to the team," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Their skills are complementary to each other and will be a nice addition to the team that we will have in 2006. I think we added to our depth with players that are determined and excited to make a difference in our program."

Jenny Collins
Lansdale, Pa./North Penn HS

Two-time All-American honorable mention at North Penn High under coach Jami Wilus ... scored 75 goals and added 25 assists in helping the team to a 17-3 record as a junior ... also contributed 74 draw controls and 49 ground balls ... first team Suburban One League (SOL) selection ... Teen Magazine Athlete of the Year finalist ... scored 45 goals and had seven assists as a sophomore ... has helped the team to two SOL titles ... member of Upper Atlantic teams at the national tournament ... first team All-Galaxy in 2003-04 ... father Jerald Collins played for the Buffalo Bills from 1969-72 ... chose Maryland over Princeton, Duke, Georgetown and Notre Dame.
Timchal on Collins: "Jenny is a tremendously strong player. She comes from a great high school program under Jami Wilus and club team under [former Terp] Alex Kahoe. She's a smart player who will have success for us."

Mindy Jones
Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's

Local product out of St. Mary's in Annapolis under Sue Chittim ... scooped 95 ground balls and forced 48 turnovers during her junior season for the Saints ... also scored 12 goals ... had 92 ground balls in helping lead the team to the state finals ... added eight goals and 46 defensive takeaways ... as a freshman scored five goals and grabbed 44 ground balls in helping St. Mary's to an 11-8-2 record ... helped the Mid Atlantic 1 team to the national title in 2004 ... All-Galaxy first team in 2003-04 ... played with England Crossover team in 1999 and 2001 ... chose Maryland over Loyola, Johns Hopkins, Virginia Tech and James Madison.
Timchal on Jones: "Mindy's playing style is smooth; she has great finesse. She's a good kid from successful high school and club programs. She has the right attitude to come in and help us win."

Sally Mancini
Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep

Four-year starter at Worcester Prep under coach Carol Hartnett ... has 165 goals and 85 assists so far during her career ... scored 60 goals and had 31 assists in helping her team to a 15-1 record ... three-time all-conference selection ... two-time All-Mason-Dixon honoree ... plays club lacrosse for SkyWalkers Blue under coach Michael McLaughlin ... also excels in basketball and soccer ... team captain on the soccer team and four-time all-conference selection.
Timchal on Mancini: "Sally's best quality is her quick feet. She is an excellent attacker that can make people miss with her moves around the net. She also is a great finisher with a strong shot. She will be able to make things happen offensively for us."

Alex Mavris
Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake HS

Excellent lacrosse, basketball and soccer player out of Chesapeake High ... first team All-Galaxy playing with the CCLax club team ... team captain for the soccer team as a senior ... a Chesapeake's "Minds In Motions" honoree, recognizing the school's top student-athletes ... chose Maryland over Limestone College.
Timchal on Mavris: "Alex has a couple of things you just can't coach: height and athletic ability. Those qualities are going to be great assets for us. She moves well and has good body position on defense, and she should grow tremendously as she gains experience.

Maeve McKew
Glen Arm, Md./Maryvale Prep

Three-sport athlete at Maryvale Prep ... an all-star at the Elite 300 camp ... plays club lacrosse for Skywalkers Blue under coach Mike McLaughlin ... also excels in field hockey and basketball ... team captain for the field hockey team that went 13-4-2 as a senior ... IAAM all-star ... team's Hustle Award as a junior ... recognized as the team's most improved player on the basketball team ... winner of the Donald Litz Memorial Lacrosse Scholarship as a junior ... chose Maryland over Vanderbilt, Loyola and Delaware.
Timchal on McKew: "Maeve is another physically strong defensive player who has great athletic ability. She knows how to check and gets into good position defensively. She is committed to improving and is a great leader."

Kate McWilliams
Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS

First team all-area and all-division player as a junior at Mountain Lakes High ... helped team to a 19-3 record and the county title ... was county tournament MVP ... second team all-state ... scored 84 goals, the sixth-most in the state ... lead the team with 28 assists ... Daily Record Player of the Year ... first team All-Galaxy League in summer club action ... as a sophomore, helped the Lakers to their first county title in school history ... led the team in assists with 35, and also added 41 goals and 63 ground balls ... second team all-division honoree ... is also a team captain for the soccer and basketball teams ... member of the New Jersey All-Star U-13 and U-15 squads at the U.S. Lacrosse Festivals ... hails from the same high school as current men's lacrosse assistant Jeff Shirk ... selected the Terps over Northwestern, Syracuse, Boston College, Duke and Rutgers.
Timchal on McWilliams: "One of Kate's best qualities is her unique ability to get a shot off in traffic when you don't think she can. She is able to do that because she is so strong and has quick feet. She has a winning attitude and will help us continue our winning tradition here at Maryland."

Meghan Mulford
Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep

Smart, athletic player with plenty of potential ... plays club for the Skywalkers, along with incoming recruits Maeve McKew, Sally Mancini and Kearny Raver ... comes from a powerful lacrosse program at Notre Dame Prep ... also an excellent basketball player ... chose Maryland because of the facilities and the lacrosse tradition ... her father, Mike, played lacrosse and football at UMBC ... has three cousins who have played at the collegiate level.
Timchal on Mulford: "We think that Meghan has great potential because of her athleticism and vision. She's a smart player who knows the game. She is able to get into the right spots defensively because she sees the play before it happens."

Kearny Raver
Laurel, Md./Mt. deSales Academy

Athletic player out of Mt. deSales Academy ... joins sister Martha on the Terrapin squad ... scooped 31 ground balls as a junior ... also netted 14 goals and 12 assists ... as a sophomore, grabbed 24 ground balls to go with three goals and one assist ... was team MVP on freshman JV squad ... excels in jumps and middle distance on the track ... holds league records in the 500m and long jump ... three-time all-conference athlete in indoor track ... both of her parents also attended the University of Maryland ... picked the Terps over Towson, Penn State, Johns Hopkins and Delaware.
Timchal on Raver: "Kearny will be able to change a game with her speed. She is able to get up and down the field well and is an excellent transition player. She wants to be a Terp and her enthusiasm will be nothing but a positive for our team.
