Terps Cap Road Trip with Stony Brook Rout

March 22, 2011

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - No. 1 Maryland concluded its East Coast road trip with its second straight offensive outburst, topping Stony Brook, 19-5, Tuesday.

Senior Brandi Jones led the Terps (9-0, 3-0 ACC) with a career-high four goals as Maryland tallied 14 of its 19 scores in the first half. Jones was backed up by multi-goal showings from Karri Ellen Johnson (3), Sarah Mollison (3), Bria Phillips (2), Katie Schwarzmann (2), and Colleen Dawson (2g). Johnson, Mollison and Alex Aust all added two assists each.

Much as it did Sunday at Boston College, the Terrapin attack wasted no time finding the scoreboard, storming to 7-0 lead before Stony Brook was able to muster its first goal at 21:14. Johnson completed her hat trick in the initial run. The Terps outscored the Seawolves 7-2 in the final 20 minutes of the first stanza.

Five different players accounted for Maryland's scoring in the second half with goals coming from Dawson, Mollison, Jones, Philips and Mary Angstadt.

Maryland utilized its entire healthy roster in the match, which took place at the venue for this year's NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Terrapins, who are winners of 19 straight, were led defensively by Schwarzmann and Kristen McAfee, who tallied two caused turnovers and three ground balls, respectively. Danielle Kirk registered a career-high six draw controls.

"I was really pleased with our performance today," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We took care of the ball well and took advantage of our opportunities."

Maryland heads home for a contest with No. 9 James Madison Saturday at noon.
