COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's lacrosse team has announced its captains for the 2010 campaign. Sarah Mollison will join two-time captains Caitlyn McFadden, Amanda Spinnenweber and Karissa Taylor as captains for the defending ACC champions.
McFadden, who was tabbed Lacrosse Magazine's Preseason Player of the Year, gathered a slew of awards last season, including a sweep of every conference award and IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year. The senior returns to the Terps this season after helping lead the United States to gold at the FIL World Cup in Prague this past summer.
Spinnenweber is a critical role player in the Terrapin midfield and returns for her third season as a mainstay in Maryland's starting lineup. While starting and playing in every match except one, Spinnenweber tallied career-highs in goals (26), assists (9), points (35), draw controls (22), caused turnovers (10) and ground balls (16) in 2009.
Taylor, along with fellow classmate Katie Gallagher, is the backbone of Maryland's defense. The senior picked up Third Team All-America honors last season while guiding the Terrapin defense to a 9.11 GAA. Taylor also contributed offensively during her junior campaign, registering 10 goals and four assists.
Joining the trio of captains from last year's squad which finished the 2009 season with a trip to the NCAA Final Four and a 21-1 record is yet another All-American, Sarah Mollison. The junior started in every match for Maryland's attack in 2009, scoring 44 goals and dishing out 38 assists for the ACC champion Terps. Mollison was a member of the Australian national team that finished runner-up to the U.S. at the FIL World Cup this summer.
"We are very excited to announce our four captains for the 2010 season, Caitlyn McFadden, Sarah Mollison, Amanda Spinnenweber and Karissa Taylor," head coach Cathy Reese said. "With the return of Caitlyn, Amanda and Karissa as captains, we have three leaders that will give us a wealth of experience.
"Sarah adds to our already solid group of captains. After a great sophomore year, as well the experience she gained by playing in the World Cup this summer, we are excited for Sarah to join Caitlyn, Karissa and Amanda as captains for 2010 season."
Maryland, which finds itself ranked No. 2 in Lacrosse Magazine's Preseason Top 25 poll, opens its season at home versus Richmond on Feb. 14.
