Maryland 110, Catholic 34

Head Coach Brenda Frese

On the team’s play tonight:
“It was obviously great to be able to start competition and we’re excited about our depth this season and we’re healthy.  You can see the waves we can bring in, in terms of our 14 players.  Obviously, exhibitions are the first time you get to put on the Maryland uniform for our freshman and our three players coming back from ACL’s and Tierney Pfirman too.  We were able to see a lot of nice things tonight.”

On playing the game for the first time with everyone healthy:

“It’s exciting for us.  We do feel that this season our depth and experience, we can send waves at once and finding the right combinations work really well together.  Not having a drop off is an exciting thing for us and you can see with that roster we are really talented.”

On if everyone has fully recovered from last year’s injuries:
“I think you were able to see tonight that all three of our ACL injuries are back, and Tierney Pfirman is as well. They have just recently been cleared, so they have to get back to game shape, conditioning, and get their confidence.”

On the play of the freshmen tonight:
“I thought they were terrific. I thought they came in and I didn’t think they played like freshmen. I thought they played like veteran basketball players. You could see the spark, the athleticism, and the backcourt play, especially when Lexie Brown and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough were in together. Brionna Jones with her hands and A’Lexus Harrison with her offensive rebounding were also good. I thought they did a really nice job in terms of coming in and really being comfortable and confident in their first game.”

On the early practice rule change:
“I love it. It’s a terrific rule. I think all of our freshmen can say it allows them to get comfortable much earlier in the summer time to the pace and the coaching. I think it had a huge impact.”

On rebounding in the second half:
“We talked about it at half time that we were only up plus four or five at halftime so it was something we were disappointed with and wanted to improve on.  So, I like what we talked about at halftime and took it to the court in the second half.”

On what she was pleased with:
“I think the two things that really came through was our defense and rebounding.  We wanted to see where we were at in those two areas and then just finding combinations.  As we move on, we’ll get better heading into conference play.”

Redshirt Junior Guard Laurin Mincy

On how she felt coming into this game, coming off of injury:
“I felt pretty good. I was pretty excited to be back on the court. I had my teammates encouraging me all summer, motivating me and pushing me to get back, so it just felt good to get back out there running with them.”

On how big it was to be able to come back and play tonight:
“It was just a start. Like Coach Frese said, I am just getting back to gameplay.”

Freshman Guard Lexie Brown

On her first game at Comcast:
“It was a lot of excitement. Comcast is huge, and I never played in a place like this before for just an exhibition game. To play with girls at their skill level and athleticism was amazing and to have teammates like that. It was a lot of fun, and a great atmosphere.”
