COLLEGE PARK, Md. – On Nov. 19, 2012 University of Maryland President Wallace Loh announced Maryland’s plan to move to the Big Ten Conference. One year, seven months and 12 days later, that plan became a reality, as Maryland became an official member of the Big Ten Conference Tuesday.

The Mighty Sound of Maryland provided background music for the joyous occasion as Terrapin staff, alumni and fans joined together on the lawn in front of the Mitchell Building to celebrate the monumental day.

“This is a great day for the University of Maryland. We are Terps. We think big. We move forward,” Loh said. “We celebrate campus wide because the benefits of membership in the Big Ten span the whole institution.”

Director of athletics Kevin Anderson also addressed the crowd, reflecting on Maryland’s exciting journey towards joining the Big Ten Conference.

“Today is a great day to be a Terp,” Anderson said. “Nineteen months ago we started this voyage and now we are here today and I’m very proud to be a new member of the Big Ten. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who worked tirelessly to make this possible.”

Attendees also enjoyed the newest ice cream flavor, “B1G Ice Cream,” courtesy of the University of Maryland Dairy. The ingredients are as follows: “a rich and creamy bourbon vanilla bean ice cream swirled with a raspberry and cream de cassis Melba sauce, accented with pieces of three historic, uniquely Maryland cakes: Kossuth cake, Smith Island Cake and Lord Baltimore cake, splashed with a hint of Tiple Sec.”
