COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman A’Lexus Harrison of the eighth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team will redshirt the 2013-14 season head coach Brenda Frese announced Friday. Harrison, a Baltimore native, had her appendix removed around the start of the season and has been recovering since.
“We have had numerous conversations with A'Lexus and put a lot of thought into this,” Frese said. “We feel the best decision for her is to redshirt this season. It provides her an advantage as she can practice and get ahead as she prepares for next season."
“I’ve talked a lot with the coaches and my family and we all feel like this is the best way for me to work hard, get better and be more than ready for next year,” Harrison said.
Harrison averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds per game in her senior season at Digital Harbor High School, amassing 1,465 career points, 1,300 rebounds, 565 assists and 245 blocks. She helped lead the Rams to the Baltimore City Division I title as a senior and was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Metro First Team as a junior and senior.
The Terrapins (10-1) are ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press and USA Today National Coaches polls.
