COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jake Layman had a game-high 23 points and Charles Mitchell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Maryland men’s basketball team won its lone exhibition, 84-39, against Catholic Sunday at Comcast Center.

“We had a lot of players play well,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “Charles Mitchell rebounding, Jake [Layman] shooting the ball and Nick Faust defensively were tremendous tonight.”

The game started out back-and-forth for the first seven minutes until Layman propelled the Terps with three consecutive 3-pointers in a 68 second span to give Maryland a 17-10 lead it would never relinquish.

Layman’s 23 points were on 7-for-12 shooting and 5-for-7 beyond the arc. Had this been a regular season game, it would have been a career-high points. He previously had 20 points against Virginia Tech last season.

Mitchell led the defense, posting 10 of his 11 rebounds in the first half. Damonte Dodd added eight rebounds, while Evan Smotrycz had seven rebounds and four assists.

Maryland shot .528 percent from the field and .474 from downtown, as it held Catholic to 19% shooting in the second half.

The Terps start the regular season on November 8 versus Connecticut at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit
