College Park, Md. (Comcast Center)
#5 Duke 75, #8 Maryland 59
Head Coach Brenda Frese
"You can't thank our fans enough, to own all 10 of the attendance records [ACC Women's basketball single game attendance] is special for us with the support that we have. It was a tough night for us. Credit Duke, I think they came in here ready to play. I think they shot the ball extremely well. Their physicality is hard to match on the glass; they did a really good job. I thought setting a tone, it took us back. I thought they did a tremendous job sharing the basketball and making some really good plays. Like I told our team, this season we continue to learn great lessons and how we have competed all season. We are going to learn from this game and move forward."
On Duke's defense:
"I thought they had a great game plan, we became a jumpshooting team. I think we took too many shots from the perimeter, we settled. Credit their game plan that they had coming in."
On Duke's 17-4 run:
"I was disappointed. There were 20-some free-throws down at Cameron [Indoor Stadium], and we didn't get to see that today. Maybe that was our lack of aggressiveness. Credit them by making the plays that they needed to. We didn't help ourselves in that situation. There are still things we can control; defense and rebounding are areas that we can really improve on."
On the Team Tyler event:
"I am proud of our alumni for forming the foundation in my son's name. This game to have the attendance we have and the exposure, will continue to help bring awareness to cancer, and to make a difference through a basketball game."
Senior Forward Tianna Hawkins
On the slow start:
"I felt like we have to fight. If they are going to be physical with us, we have to be physical back. We can't have the lapses that we had this game. We have to give maximum effort the whole 40 minutes."
Junior Forward Alyssa Thomas
On slowing her down:
"You are not going to score 30 points every game. They were really physical and good at heating us up, and they made it difficult to get good looks."
Freshman Guard Chloe Pavlech
On the adjustments she made from the last time they played Duke:
"Well I think this time I actually played for Maryland instead of playing for Duke, we just fell short this time. I was talking to Coach Frese, and my teammates helped me a lot more this game. They just kept feeding me confidence. The bigs were able to set screens for me in the full court and that helped me relieve some of the pressure."
On the team's outside shooting:
"I think we did not come out with maximum effort and a lot of our energy wasn't there, so a lot of our shots were short."
Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
"That was just a great, great basketball game. It was great for our team. I'm just really proud of our team. We've had a rough week. We played hard, played together; very poised throughout the game. Just getting better as a team, that's what's important to us right now. From here, we've just got to continue to get better. We've seen what the top dog kind of teams look like and we know what that's about. We're just trying to get better and grow."
On whether they proved people wrong:
"We don't think like that. We're just trying to get better. We had an All-American point guard out for the season, which has never happened in the history of the ACC. Matter of fact, I don't think it's happened nationally. If you could find me a comparable example of losing a player like Chelsea Gray... that's never happened. You can imagine how a team would feel if they lost their very best player. I just think it's great that our team knows how they can play. They want to step up and do what they do. That's what we do at Duke, just try to grow and get better. We don't pay attention to other people's thoughts."
On their defense:
"The team did a great job defensively. It was hard. No. 21 got a few more than last. We were pretty consistent on No. 25, but they're a great team with great players. We weren't very pleased with our rebounding. Our defense was better than our rebounding and I thought the team did a great job playing defense and just reading each other."
On the game plan on Alyssa Thomas:
"She's a great player. One of the best that's hit the ACC that's for sure. You can't really stop her completely so we just tried to play good defense around her. She I think had two points less than she had at Duke. She averaged 15 points against us. That was slowing her down because she's that good of a player."
Duke Guard Alexis Jones
On whether this game was her coming out party:
"I wouldn't say coming out party. I've been really humbled. Just learning from the juniors, and just trying to take my time. Just trying to listen to them and feed off my own energy and stuff."
