Hawkins, Thomas Lead as Terps Roll Eagles

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 10 Maryland women's basketball's dominant duo of Tianna Hawkins and Alyssa Thomas combined for 50 points Sunday in the Terps' 85-62 romp of Boston College at Comcast Center.

Hawkins went 11-for-14 from the field for 26 points, including 19 in the second half, and six boards. Thomas added 24 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks to lead Maryland (18-3, 9-1 ACC) to its eighth straight win. Hawkins and Thomas are Nos. 1 and 2 in the ACC in scoring and rebounding and Thomas is second in assists as well.

Kristen Doherty led Boston College (9-12, 3-7) with 18 points before fouling out with 5:43 to play. Kerri Shields added 14 for the Eagles.

Alicia DeVaughn, who was honored before the game for reaching the 500-rebound mark, had 13 points and nine rebounds for Maryland. Katie Rutan and Malina Howard each added 10 points for the Terps, who shot 50 percent from the floor for the third straight game.

Boston College had an 11- 0 run in the first half that put the Terps behind by eight as Shields tied the game, then the Eagles scored off three straight long-range jumpers by Nicole Boudreau and Dougherty.

The Terps came back with four straight baskets by Thomas, Howard, Thomas again and the tying basket by Hawkins. Rutan made a 3-pointer put the Terps ahead for good, 18-15.

Maryland outrebounded Boston College, 43-26, and beat the Eagles in the paint by 25, 48-23.

Thomas became the 16th player in the program's history to score 1,400 points. The junior now has 1,405 points in her career. Hawkins has scored in double figures in 19 straight games and 20 of 21 games this season.

Next, the Terrapins will hit the road for back-to-back games in North Carolina next weekend. They will play Wake Forest (10-11, 3-6) Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem.
