COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Tianna Hawkins had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Alicia DeVaughn contributed 15 points and 11 boards, and No. 5 Maryland rolled to a season-opening 88-47 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Friday night.

Alyssa Thomas scored 14 for the Terrapins, who led by 25 at halftime and coasted to the finish. Freshman Malina Howard added 12 points and seven boards.

The Terps were second in the country in rebounding margin last year (+12.9) and continued that dominance Friday. They outrebounded the Mountaineers, 54-25, and outscored them in the paint, 64-20.

"I really liked how we came out to play. Our energy was fantastic and I thought we did a terrific job of sharing the basketball tonight," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought we were really unselfish with our play and I am really excited about the dominance of our post play. All three of them were very good and very active on the glass. They gave us a great post presence inside and some really positive things to build on for our first game."

Hawkins, a 6-foot-3 senior, shot 8 for 11 from the floor and finished with her 25th career double-double.

Kayla Grossett scored 17 for the Mountaineers (0-1), who shot 29 percent from the field and were outrebounded 54-25. The Mount fell to 0-17 against ACC schools, including 0-5 versus Maryland.

Hawkins scored 14 in the first half, and the Terrapins limited the Mountaineers to 1-for-12 shooting from 3-point range in taking a 48-23 lead. Maryland closed the first stanza on an 18-5 run.

Thomas and Laurin Mincy were named to the Wooden Award Women's Preseason Top 30 list, released Friday.

Maryland has four starters back from the team that last season won the Atlantic Coast Conference and reached the Elite Eight. Prior to Friday's game, the Terrapins received their rings for the 2012 ACC Championship.

Next, the Terrapins will make the short trip to Baltimore for a 7 p.m. game at Loyola Sunday night.
