COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team will welcome volleyball player Caitlin Adams to its roster, effective immediately. Adams, a 6-3 forward from Leawood, Kan., played for the Terrapins' volleyball team the last two seasons after transferring from Texas A&M.
Adams played for her high school and AAU teams in Kansas City before focusing on volleyball. She will be eligible to play in Thursday's game at North Carolina.
"We are really excited to welcome Caitlin to our family," head coach Brenda Frese said. "She's athletic and is a team player that we know can really help us out depth-wise. She came in and spent time with us and we just knew she'd fit right in with our program."
Adams played middle blocker with the Terrapin volleyball team. She saw action in 184 sets and recorded 295 kills, 142 blocks and had a hitting percentage of .257.
"I heard about the injuries on the basketball team this year and I just thought I could help them out," Adams said. "I knew a lot of the girls and contacted the coaches and came out one day. It's such a well-respected program and the coaches and girls are a lot of fun."
Most recently, four players scored in double figures and two notched double-doubles to help No. 8 Maryland cruise to a 72-40 victory over Hartford on Saturday in the championship game of the Terrapin Classic.
Alyssa Thomas led with 22 points, 11 rebounds, Tianna Hawkins scored 16 points, and Alicia DeVaughn added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Maryland, which has won six straight games. Tierney Pfirman scored 11.
Next, the Terrapins will play at No. 15 North Carolina (12-1) Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. The game will be shown live online on ESPN3.com and broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network. It can be heard on AM 1300 and AM 570, as well as online for a fee on UMTerps.com.
