Selection Monday Quotes

Head Coach Brenda Frese

On what the feeling was when they saw their name:
"Obviously, we're excited. It wouldn't have mattered who it was, we're ready to go. This is what you play all season long for and now it's time for us to do our homework and study up on them."

On looking forward to a potential rematch with UConn:
"It's one game at a time. I mean obviously our staff focuses on what's ahead and just having great preparation at this time."

On being concerned about their recent rough patch:
"It starts anew. Obviously, we knew with our limited numbers, going down the stretch was going to be difficult. Now in the NCAA Tournament, you have the day in between and it sets up well for us. We're coming off some of our best practices."

On what she knows about Quinnipiac:
"I don't [know that much]. I know our staff will do a tremendous job. We'll watch as much film as we can, and get our team prepared."

On what they know about Michigan State: "I know they had a tremendous season and that they went through a lot of injuries similar to us. They had a terrific Big 10 run. They made it to the championship game of the Big 10 Tournament so they're playing extremely well."

On whether they were unhappy with a four seed:
"I don't really look at the number in front. For us, we're hosting at Comcast, and it's survive and advance. Obviously, it's tremendous competition that you're going to be playing against every night in the NCAA Tournament. I was just looking more to see who we were playing. From there, you just take it one game at a time."

On hosting at home:
"It's exciting. For us, given our limited numbers, you get to sleep in your own bed, get to stick to your own routine. We get to bring terrific teams into Comcast with our fans behind us. I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to host again."

On the benefits of the long layoff:
"This year it was really good for us. It allowed us to get some much needed rest. For the amount of minutes that these top six players are playing, it couldn't have come at a better time."

Junior Forward Alyssa Thomas

On injuries and returns:
"We're definitely ready for this. We're hitting our shots. We've been through this. We had the adversity early in the year."

On tournament play versus regular season:
"I don't think it's any different. The only thing is, one game and you can go home. We just have to understand the mentality and come out play our hardest every game."

On the adversity this team has faced this season:
"It's kind of unexplainable, the adversity that we've had to face this year. But, we never us that as an excuse. We only use that as motivation. And now, people are coming into our home and have to play in this environment."

On getting to play at Comcast Center:
"It is a very huge advantage just because we're comfortable, we get to sleep in our own beds and then you have your fans being able to come out and support."

On being a No. 4 seed:
"It really didn't matter to me. Just happy to be able to play, and get to play more."

On the upcoming opponents:
"I'm not very familiar with any of the teams, but that's tournament time. You've got to familiarize yourself quickly. It's tournament time and we're ready for this. We're ready not to go home and we're gonna play our best basketball."

On the mentality going into the tournament:
"It's one game at a time. And if you look past, that's how teams sneak up on you."

On approaching the end of her junior campaign:
"Just looking back, we were just here at freshman year. And now, to be here at junior year, we've only got one more of these."

Senior Forward Tianna Hawkins

On her initial reaction to Maryland's seeding in the NCAA tournament:
"I mean of course we had nerves, but to know where we are now it's a big relief."

On beginning the tournament in College Park:
"We love playing at home, so we'll see how everything plays out."

On if she feels the team can make a run:
"Most definitely, we're going into the NCAA tournament very confident. We're even more pumped now that we know who we play and when we play, so it's exciting."

Freshman Guard Chloe Pavlech

On experiencing her first NCAA tournament:
"I'm actually really excited, I'm ready to play now. It's funny, because my legs were kind of shaking during the presentation, and Malina [Howard] was like `Chloe calm down we're not playing yet!' It was really funny because her and I both said to each other `You know what I feel like we're in this bracket' so it was crazy when we got selected."

On what shape the team is in mentally now entering the tournament:
"Now, I definitely feel like we're in a really good place. As Coach Frese said, we had a really good practice and it was probably our best practice of the year."

Junior Center Alicia DeVaughn

On the team's seeding:
"We're excited we get another opportunity in the NCAA tournament, and the great thing is the first two rounds are here in College Park. So we won't be moving, until the later on in the tournament."

On being able to play the first two rounds in College Park:
"It's a great opportunity, we have our fans, our students, friends, and family are able to come because it's closer for them. It's a comfortable atmosphere."

On what needs to happen for the team to reset itself:
"Nothing changes, we just have to go out there and play everyone like it's our last and we have to stay focused We all know that last year we lost to Notre Dame when we wanted to make it further. So right now, it's just staying focused and staying together."
