#10 Maryland 84, #24 Miami 62

Head Coach Brenda Frese

On tonight's win:
"It was a convincing win tonight. I felt like we were clicking on all cylinders. The energy we came out and played with; we set the tone early. I am really proud of our second half effort. That is an area where we challenged ourselves at halftime, in terms of being able to come in and really extend it and play the way that we feel we are capable to play. Miami is a tremendous team. They play extremely hard. I thought we battled every single possession. That is close to one of our best games we have played up to date."

On how the team finished the game:
"We talked about teachable moments at halftime and when you challenge this team they respond. It says a lot about who we are because they want to continue to perform and get better. We're enjoying the process, but we understand it's only January and we have to continue to get better. We were really good tonight, but as we move to tomorrow we have to get ready for a really tough game in Blacksburg. No one in our locker room had beat Miami, and that's a pride factor."

On freshman guard Chloe Pavlech's performance:
"She was the X-factor. We felt like they were going to come at her hard. We had to get her prepared, in terms of the doubles and traps were going to come her way and she was ready from the tip. She played with a lot of confidence and energy. Give credit to her teammates that continue to find her and give her great confidence. To see her progression has been a lot of fun to watch."

On the second half:
"When we are not turning the ball over, we look pretty good. That was something we talked about at halftime and every timeout was just staying locked in and staying in the possessions that we were involved in. Credit the growth of this team, we are really starting to come together and you are seeing that."

Freshman Guard Chloe Pavlech

On how much she thought she would contribute offensively this year:
"Honestly, I was not completely sure, but luckily, people would start doubling Tianna and Alyssa and I would find myself open. It is just a credit to them to be able to find me and luckily I can knock it down."

On her maturity:
"I think a lot of it has to do with my teammates building up my confidence. Just being in the open spot when everyone was double teamed. I think that it was nice that my teammates had my back.

Junior Forward Alyssa Thomas

On the team's performance:
"Just the energy that we gave off today, we knew we were going to win that game. We never let up and never let Miami get comfortable."

Senior Forward Tianna Hawkins

On poor first half:
"Shots were not going my way and I was not really playing that well, but my teammates stepped up and played a good half. Their success made me successful, so I could not really get down on myself too much."

Miami Head Coach Katie Meier

Opening Statement:
"Maryland beat us in a lot of different ways tonight. It was great execution of a game plan with a lot of balance. The 3-pointers in the first half definitely hurt us a lot. They pass the ball as well as any team I've seen this year. When they get the ball in the middle of the court, they have great size with Alyssa Thomas. When they did that and hit some threes from the corner we got pulled away from the basket. Then in the second half they just dominated us in the in paint.

We lost our composure on a couple of possessions when we were down six or down eight. We tried to run a play, but we didn't execute well and ended up taking a vulnerable shot as the shot clock was running down. We were supposed to have fresher legs, have more depth, and be the team that was applying more pressure. I thought that Maryland was a lot fresher than we were and played with a lot more energy. When they have that size and play with that tempo they are hard to stop. We did not pressure them or turn them over as much as we needed to and it became a pretty ugly game.

The story of the game was their newcomers. The shots by Chloe Pavlech and Tierney Pfirman were unbelievable. Malina Howard was something else. She is 6-4 and can catch and shoot the ball from 10 feet. That is so hard to defend when you are rotating and scrambling. We knew their returning players were good, but their newcomers made huge shots and it really broke us."

On Chloe Pavlech:
"She had a really quick release. Her scoring was phenomenal but her composure was fantastic. She was very composed. With some of the injuries Maryland has had, we felt that a typical Miami team would get their guards to turn the ball over. We didn't get that done today."

On the difference between the two teams:
"Their bigs played well tonight, but they scored their averages today. It was the newcomers that made the real difference. On film, Chloe and Malina weren't scoring or playing like they did today. That is Maryland evolving as a team and trusting each other."
