#10 Maryland 94, American 54

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening Statement:
"This was a really nice game for us to be able to get back and do the little things that have allowed us to be successful. I definitely think we got better defensively today and, specifically, really shared the basketball. You can see our assist to turnover ratio, I thought we were unselfish. I thought Chloe [Pavlech] did a tremendous job being ready to play and getting our team into an offense that dominated inside with our post play. I thought we were really good in terms of how we played with each other today."

On Saturday's loss' impact on today's game:
"It was really important. We have been talking about having a fast start, but I think we were definitely motivated from getting the tough loss the other night. We wanted to bounce back quickly and be able to not look back."

On starting Chloe Pavlech for the first time:
"We talked about it obviously as a staff and even as a team. I just think we have to get our players back into their natural positions with asking Laurin [Mincy] and Alyssa Thomas to do a little bit more outside of their natural positions. Obviously, Chloe played point guard on her high school AAU team. With her level of toughness and energy she has, I thought she was really good and really solid. She has a high IQ and knows how to get the right people the ball and the pass in the right position. She was really solid for us."

On thinking positively entering the game:
"I knew from our two practices [that we were going to win]. It was night and day between our two practices leading up to Saint Joe's and our two practices after Saint Joe's. When you know them and you have a pulse on them, there was no question in terms of how we came back. It says a lot about our character. I know each of our players on this team, the character they have. They all want to perform and do better for this team and for Maryland and it says a lot about them."

On preparing for Nebraska on the road:
"It should be easy to get this team's attention. We know the week we have ahead and for us it's just about getting better every day. Obviously, we're humbled from the other night so we just have to continue to go out and just get maximum effort and work to improve every time we step out on the floor."

On preparing for Nebraska:
"It's going to be a lot of fun. That's why you come to Maryland. You want to be ranked at the highest level and you want to play that kind of competition. Going into two hostile environments is going to prepare us for conference play at a really early point in our schedule."

Senior Forward Tianna Hawkins

On Saturday's loss' impact on today's game
"Our main focus after looking back at the loss last game was coming out strong and maintaining it throughout the game."

Freshman Guard Chloe Pavlech

On her play:
"I think it's really helpful because Coach B and everyone else on the team have really trusted me and with their trust, it has been able to give me a lot of confidence. Everyone on our team can score. It's just the matter of giving them the ball at the right time and everyone can put it in the basket."

On preparing for Nebraska:
"The best teams want to play the best teams, so we want to go out there and make a statement."

Freshman Center Malina Howard

On losing to Saint Joe's:
"It was a very big shock. We didn't expect it, but I think it was a really good learning experience for us as a team to just be able to see that it isn't always going to be so easy. People aren't going to lay down for us. Everyone is going to come after us because we have a target on our back, so making sure we always fight through adversity."

On preparing for Nebraska on the road:
"It's exciting. It's going to be a lot of good competition. I think we have to stay mentally focused, prepare and trust our coaches."

American Head Coach Matt Corkery

Opening Statement:
"Congrats to Maryland, these guys are obviously a really good basketball team and every time we play them it's just a good challenge. It's one that we really have to look at in the right perspective for our team, in that we have to pick where we can take positives. I felt like we were kind of outmatched at a lot of different spots on the floor. They won a lot of the individual battles. [Tianna]Hawkins was great. We really didn't have any answer for their bigs, and that's why the score ended up being so high. I thought we played in spurts and did some good things. We can definitely take some positives from how we played. We'll learn from it."

On Maryland's mentality after losing to Saint Joseph's:
"We knew that would probably wake them up. In my experience playing teams like this, they tend to be a different animal at home than when they are on the road. Anytime we come in here, we know we are going to have our hands full, and coming off that loss, we knew they were going to be ready to get after it."

On having a chance to win:
"We don't talk a lot about winning and losing going into any game. We don't focus on the outcome. Our team understands that these guys are really good, and that we would have to play at a tremendously high level to be successful. What we try to do is focus on the details and focus on how we're going to execute our stuff. That's how we approach it."

On learning from this game:
"One time in the first half, I looked out on the court and we had four freshmen and a sophomore on the floor. For us, we've got to win our conference tournament, and last I checked it wasn't March. Our focus is how we are going to be good in February and March, so when you can get four freshman on the floor and they can make some plays, they will get confidence from that. One thing about playing against a really good team, every mistake you make is exploited. Other teams on our schedule just won't do that. They can exploit all the mistakes you can make, and unfortunately we're a team that makes a lot of mistakes right now."
