  • 2016 Second Team All-Big Ten

AS A JUNIOR (2016): Had a career year, appearing in the first 44 games of the season before missing the last eight due to a torn ACL...voted team captain by teammates...named Second Team All-Big Ten...batted .331, with a .408 Big Ten batting average...led the team in triples (4) and stolen bases (8)...in two consecutive series against teams receiving votes in the top 25 (Ohio State and Nebraska) Calta went 12-for-19 with five RBIs and two triples, which ranked second in the Big Ten...hit a go-ahead triple in the 7th inning against Ohio State (3/26) and a game-tying triple in the 5th inning against No. 13 Oklahoma (3/12)...had a stretch from 3/20-4/5 where the junior went 16-for-25...recorded first hit of 2016 season against Georgia State (2/19)...stole four bases in the first ten games of the season...hit safely in five straight games (2/19-26)...knocked RBI double against No. 5 Alabama (2/21)...picked up clutch two-out two RBI single that ultimately would be the game decider against Boston (2/26)...went 2-for-2 with a career high three runs, a walk, and a triple against George Washington (3/5)...had a 5-for-11 weekend at the Oklahoma Invitational, which included a 2-for-2 outing against St. Louis (3/11) and a 2-for-5 showing against No. 13 Oklahoma, which inluded a game-tying triple...went 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base against Binghamton (3/20)...after torrent pace in eight games from 3/25-4/5 where Calta lifted her batting average to .356 there was a 2-for-3 outing in a win against Michigan State (4/10)...keeping up her hot April, Calta went 2-for-3 with a RBI single against Penn State (4/15)...picked up a hit in each game of a nationally televised doubleheader against Rutgers (4/20). 

AS A SOPHOMORE (2015): Appeared in 38 games, making 18 starts...used her speed to her advantage, leading the team with 9 stolen bases and scoring 11 runs...batted at a .267 clip, notching 12 hits throughout the year...went 2-4 with 2 runs against Lafayette on opening weekend (2/7)...came through in the pinch-hitting role with a hit and a run against Northern Iowa (3/1)...followed with a 2-for-3 performance at #16 UCF (3/3)...1-for-1 with an RBI in pinch-hitting role vs. Lafayette (3/15)...came back the next day with a 2-3 outing vs. Princeton (3/16)...scored tying run on two Maryland walkoff wins (3/28 vs. Ohio State, 4/18 vs. Penn State). 

AS A FRESHMAN (2014): Appeared in 34 games, making 14 starts...became the Terps' pinch-running specialist, leading the team with 11 stolen bases and scoring 15 runs...posted nine hits for a .209 batting average...had an incredible collegiate debut, going 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI against DePaul (2/7)...followed with a 3-for-4 performance at FIU (2/7)...went 1-for-2 with a run against Radford (2/28)...scored a run as a pinch-runner at North Carolina (3/22)...scored a run in the final game at #8 Florida State (4/6)...scored a run in back-to-back games against Delaware State (4/16) and Virginia Tech (4/19)...scored one run in all three games against Pittsburgh (5/3-4).

Before Maryland: Pitcher at St. Paul's School for Girls...team won IAAM Championship in 2012...owns school strikeout record...named Varsity Sports Athlete of the Week, Extra Innings Athlete of the Week and was a finalist for Baltimore Sun Athlete of the Week...named a 2011-12 All-Star...played for Maryland Black Ice...team was USSSA Emily Burke Champion, ASA For the Cure champions, ASA Delaware Invitational Tournament Bracket champions, TNT invitational showcase undefeated...played for Kelly Wilkinson at St. Paul's and her father, Keith Calta, with the Maryland Black Ice.

Personal: Sarah Marie Calta...daughter of Keith and Kathy Calta...father played football and baseball at Maryland...father also coached her club team, Maryland Black Ice...chose Maryland because her dad played sports and she grew up coming to events...also liked the size and academics and loves Maryland's school pride...lists her biggest sports thrill as pitching a four-hour championship game, striking out a batter with bases loaded, two outs on a full count to continue the game in the 11th inning...advice to young players is to, "enjoy every minute of softball because one day is ends"...kinesiology major...wants to be a chiropractor and own a practice.
