Hello Terp Nation!
Hope you had a wonderful summer! Between celebrating our historic move to the Big Ten Conference and preparing for the upcoming season, Maryland Athletics has been hard at work during the summer months. But now the time has finally arrived and there is a B1G buzz around campus as we look to kick off another exciting season here in College Park.
We hope to see you this Saturday as our football team begins the 2014 campaign with a game against James Madison at 3:30 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. Head coach Randy Edsall and the Terps have been working extremely hard this offseason. We believe you will also enjoy some enhanced amenities to the gameday experience, including advanced Wi-Fi capabilities, our new LED and a new-look Terp Town. Now located on Field House Drive just south of Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, Terp Town will feature a kids zone, live music, a beer garden, live out of town games on big screen TVs, giveaways and more.
Don’t eat too much at the pregame festivities. You will want to save some room for the can’t-miss new item on the menu, the ‘Chessie,’ a monster-sized 24-ounce hot soft pretzel smothered in back fin crab dip and melted cheddar cheese, then topped with a dusting of Old Bay for two-to-four hungry fans.
We are also thrilled to increase our exposure and grow the Maryland brand through the Big Ten Network. The first two football home games against JMU and West Virginia will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. BTN’s GameFinder feature (www.BTN.com/GameFinder) allows you to input your zip code, identify your provider and learn your BTN channel.
In addition to football, good luck to all our other teams competing this weekend. Women’s soccer picked up a big 4-0 win over William & Mary Thursday and continues its homestand against NC State Sunday. Our top-ranked field hockey team starts the 2014 campaign at the Conference Cup with matches against No. 10 Massachusetts and Northeastern, and No. 2 men’s soccer takes on No. 17 Coastal Carolina on Labor Day at Ludwig after battling #14 Louisville on the road Friday. Meanwhile, volleyball heads to Elon for the Phoenix Invitational, as cross country ushers in a new season at the Mount St. Mary’s Duals.
On Thursday evening, more than 5,000 freshmen gathered in Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium as Maryland Athletics hosted “The B1G Show” to welcome the class of 2018 on campus. Our marketing department did a tremendous teaching our newest Terps our athletic traditions and organizing a class picture on the gridiron!
An annual tradition, we look forward to welcoming back our student-athletes with a ‘Welcome Back BBQ’ at Byrd Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 2. We can’t wait to see you on campus and appreciate all of your support!
