MARYLAND HEADS TO BLACKSBURG TO FACE VIRGINIA TECH

The Terps begin a three-game set against the Virginia Tech Hokies at English Field in Blacksburg Friday at 5:30 p.m. Game two is set for a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday with the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. The Terps hold a 30-26-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Hokies.

TERRAPIN TAILS

-Maryland rolls into Blacksburg with a 2-3 mark in its last five games. In its two victories, Maryland scored a combined 22 runs on 29 hits in victories over Wake Forest (4/6), 11-3, and George Mason, 11-0 (4/6). Maryland’s 22 runs and 29 hits are the most in back-to-back games by the squad this season.

-The Terps stand at 20-11 through 31 games. That is the best mark by a Maryland squad since the team posted the same record in 2002.

-Centerfielder Charlie White has been the offensive catalyst in the past week for the Terps. During the most recent five-game stretch, White leads the team in hitting (.391) and slugging (.522), and is tied for the team high in OBP (.500), RBI (5) and doubles (3).

-After only stealing three bases in Maryland’s first 18 games, White has stolen 13 bases in the last 13 games including six bases in the past four contests. White leads the ACC with 18 and has 79 for his career, a Maryland record.

-Third baseman Jose Cuas has been a tough out over the last 10 games. Cuas leads the team in hitting (.405), slugging (.595) and RBI (11). During the stretch, Cuas has four doubles and one home run. Cuas leads the club with three homers. In ACC contests, Cuas is slugging .543, which ranks eighth in the conference.

-The Terps’ 11-0 win over George Mason Tuesday marked its ACC-leading sixth shutout of the season. In 2012, the Terps posted 10 shutouts in 56 games.

-Sunday’s projected starter, Jake Drossner, will be making his first weekend start of the season after posting a 4-0 record with a 2.03 ERA in five mid-week starts. In his last four outings, Drossner has a 0.86 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 21.0 innings and is holding opposing hitters to a .171 average.

-Maryland’s pitching staff enters the weekend ranked sixth in the ACC with a 3.10 ERA having faced four offenses that rank in the top half of the conference. The staff has held opposing teams to a .215 batting average and is averaging 8.84 strikeouts per nine, both totals rank second in the ACC.

-Maryland has committed 26 errors this season, which is the second-lowest total in the ACC this season, and its .977 fielding percentage is tied for second in the conference.

-Maryland leads the all-time series against Virginia Tech by a 30-26-1 margin. The two teams have split 24 meetings in Blacksburg.

-Last season in College Park, Maryland dropped two of three games to Virginia Tech. The Terps won the opening game of the series behind a strong performance from Anthony Papio. Papio tied the game with a two-run home run in the seventh and then won the game with a two-RBI single in the ninth.

-In 2012, the Terps last trip to Blacksburg, Maryland won the middle game of the three-game set, 8-1.
