COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland Department of Athletics is celebrating National Girls & Women In Sports Day Thursday, Feb. 6, with an array of activities prior to the Terrapin women’s basketball game against Pittsburgh.

Youth are invited to “Train with the Terps” beginning with check-in at 5:15 p.m.  Members of Maryland’s women’s teams will be on hand to participate in various sports from 5:30-6:45 p.m.  Following the event, participants will move to the Comcast Center for exciting Maryland women’s basketball action against new ACC rival Pittsburgh at 7 p.m.

Parents can register their youth (girls, grades K-8) by clicking here.  Parents are invited to call the ticket office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP to order tickets for the Maryland/Pittsburgh women’s basketball game.  Youth are free. The event is limited to the first 200 participants registered.

National Girls & Women In Sports Day (NGWSD) is a special day for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and athletics. When Title IX was enacted in 1971, 1 in 27 girls in high school participated in athletics. One in three girls participate in athletics in high school now. There has been an explosion in the number of athletic opportunities open to women and girls of all ages and levels of ability.

"Passing the Torch, Blazing the Trail!" is the theme for the 2014 NGWSD. NGWSD presents a prime opportunity to communicate to others what Title IX has accomplished and how many girls and women it truly helps.
