CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Three Maryland student-athletes will participate in the Apple Conference, an NCAA-sponsored event which promotes student-athlete wellness and substance abuse prevention.

Moise Larose (football), Maisie McCune (women’s soccer) and Bradlee Lord (men’s lacrosse) will represent the University of Maryland at the conference which will be held in Charlottesville, Va., from Jan. 17-19.

The APPLE Conferences, developed and coordinated by the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention at the University of Virginia, are the leading national training symposiums dedicated to substance abuse prevention and health promotion for student athletes and athletics department administrators.  The goal of the APPLE conference is to assist colleges in promoting student-athlete health and wellness by empowering teams of student- athletes and administrators to create an institution-specific action plan.

Participants will examine how athletics departments can enhance alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention efforts by examining the “slices” of the APPLE and assessing department's strengths and weaknesses in substance abuse prevention. The slices include recruitment, expectations and attitudes, drug testing, sanctioning, referral and counseling, policies, and education.
