Maryland-Northern Iowa Quotes
Head Coach Mark Turgeon
On the win over Northern Iowa:
"That was a heck of a college basketball game this early in the year. I thought Northern Iowa played really well. I thought they were great defensively, especially in the first half. We’re growing up. We’ve had to play two completely different teams these first two games. We had to guard a certain way against Marist and we had to guard a different way tonight. We talked about not letting them beat us from the three-point line. They got some open looks that they normally make, but I think we wore them down with our defensive pressure. I was really, really proud of our group. Second half, I think we had nine assists, two turnovers. We played at a better pace...Gutsy, gutsy win for us."
On the defensive performance:
"We talked about it before the game. We had no chance unless we played that way. We knew it. Our guys stepped up tonight. They were ready to play. Our defense is at another level, and that gives you a chance. I know they still got 66 points. They’ve been averaging about 74. They’re a good team. I thought Shaq (Cleare) did a great job on (Seth) Tuttle. I thought we played smart defensively... All in all, a really good night for this early in the year."
On Nick Faust:
"I don’t know if it’s his best game since he’s been to Maryland but it’s close. He made some shots, he made good decisions ... Defensively he really locked in, tried to guard as best he could. He was good. Nick was really good. He’s growing up, maturing. We had a lot of guys play well."
Guard Dez Wells:
On the win:
“I think it was a really good game for us. We kept our turnovers down, we executed and we defended. Probably one of the best games we defended in this year. We just want to build off that. It’s close to the most complete game that we will play this year.”
Guard Nick Faust
On the game:
"Today I came with the mindset to do what I can to help the team. Today our offense got going a little bit just from defense. Going in with that mindset really helped us."
Forward Evan Smotrycz
On Nick Faust:
"I told Nick in the locker room that this was his best game that I have ever seen him play. He played so hard and really gave us a boost tonight."
On the team's overall performance:
"I like how we finished strong in the first half and we were able to build upon that in the second half. We played well defensively, did a good job rebounding and played some sound perimeter defense."
