COLLEGE PARK, Md.Kelsey Hrebenach posted a career-high 12 blocks, Sarah Harper had 24 digs and Mary Cushman notched a double-double to lead the Maryland  volleyball team to a four-set victory over Virginia (21-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21) Friday night at Comcast Pavilion.

A teammate was there to help her most of the time (11 assisted blocks), but Hrebenach was a constant at the net for Maryland (10-5, 2-1 ACC). The sophomore became the first Terp to record 12 blocks in a match since Caitlin Adams accomplished the feat on September 10, 2011 against Sacred Heart (five sets). It was also the first time Maryland posted 18 total blocks as a team since 2011.

With the match hanging in the balance, 1-1, the Terrapins took control of the contest with a dominant third set victory, 25-14. Maryland needed just eight kills in the set, as Virginia (8-7, 1-2 ACC) hurt itself with more errors (14) than kills (12).

Carrying the momentum from the strong third set, the Terps closed the match in the fourth set with six kills from Cushman and six blocks by Hrebenach. The Cavaliers did their best to force a decisive fifth set, by Maryland took a 23-18 lead on a 5-0 run and never looked back.

Virginia’s play in the final two sets was not indicative of its effort to open the match, as it took the first set, 25-21. The Cavs notched 19 kills on a .351 hitting percentage to take the early lead. Tori Janowski led Virginia with 13 kills overall, while teammate Lauren Fuller had 45 assists.

The Terps will have a day of rest before returning to action Sunday against Virginia Tech (13-4, 1-2 ACC) at 2:00 p.m. in Comcast Pavilion. The Hokies were swept by Pittsburgh tonight in ACC action.

Sunday’s match features “Raffle Night,” as students will be entered into drawings for Maryland apparel.
