Terps Take Third at Starmount Classic

The Maryland women’s golf team finished in third place with a 72-hole score of 884 at the two-day Starmount Fall Classic in Greensboro, N.C.

Heidi Baek led the Terps with a score of 219 (70-77-72), tying for seventh place overall in the tournament.  Baek’s first round score of 70 tied for the lowest score for any Terp in the tournament.  Emily Gimpel followed Baek with another strong tournament showing finishing tied for 13th with a score of 221 (71-75-75).  Junior Juliet Vongphoumy shot a 222 (72-75-75) and finished tied for 17th.

Freshmen Alexandria Papell and Panitta Yusabai improved in their second tournament as Terps.  Papell placed tied for 29th in the tournament with a score of 227 (75-80-72).  Yusabai was right behind her to round out the group finishing tied for 33rd with a score of 228 (78-75-75).

Jessica Gregory played individually for the Terps and had a very strong showing.  She shot a 219 (75-70-74) and tied with Baek for seventh place.

“I thought the girls played well. We had a chance to win the back nine but fell a little short,” head coach Jason Rodenhaver said.  “I was very pleased with Jess Gregory’s play.  I am hoping we can get a win this coming weekend at East Carolina.”

The Terps led the tournament through 18 holes, but fell behind to Chattanooga and Campbell.  Chattanooga came in first place with an overall score of 876 and Campbell had an overall score of 878.

The Terps will return to competition next week on Monday October 7 at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
