Former Terrapin student-athlete and coach Laura Chiriaco has been named Assistant Director of Development for the Terrapin Club, announced Thursday.

Chiriaco will be working with alumni, friends, and the community to engage them with the Terrapin Club and supporting student-athlete scholarships. She will also be working with many of the professional organizations within the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area, educating them about Maryland Athletics and the Terrapin Club.

Chiriaco joined the Terrapin Club staff in July 2012 as the Program Management Specialist for the M Club.  A member of the M Club herself, Laura was named head coach of the Acrobatics and Tumbling team in August 2011. In her first season as head coach, she led the Terps to a 9-2 overall record, a second-straight NCATA championship appearance, and four event national championships.  As a member of the team from 2004-08, Chiriaco won three NCA national titles (2006, 2007, 2008) and served as captain in her junior and senior years. Though the varsity team was canceled on June 30, 2012, Chiriaco joined the spirit squad staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2012-2013 season, where she lead the all-girl cheerleading team to its 6th  NCA National Championship in program history in April 2013.

Prior to taking on the head coach role, Chiriaco taught middle school language arts in Baltimore for three years as a Teach for America 2008 corps member. She graduated from the University of Maryland in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and earned her Master’s in teaching from Johns Hopkins in 2010.
